Opening a trading office
in the Netherlands?
Boots on the ground.
QuantFlow helps foreign trading firms land in Amsterdam: the first hires, IND recognized sponsorship guidance, offers structured around the 30% ruling, and the housing chain that actually gets people through the door. Amsterdam based, trading native.
From anywhere,
to Amsterdam.
Proprietary trading firms, market makers, hedge funds and crypto-native trading companies from the US, the UK and Asia that need an EU presence and have chosen the Netherlands. You have a mandate and maybe a freshly incorporated BV. What you do not yet have is people, and every week the office stands empty is a week of burn without PnL.
Amsterdam is Europe's densest trading hub. That is why you picked it, and why competing for its talent without local knowledge is expensive. That local knowledge is what we sell.
Four things we handle.
First hires.
The mandate owner, the ops generalist, then local trading and engineering talent from the Amsterdam pool. Sequenced so the office produces PnL, not just payroll.
IND sponsorship.
Guidance through recognized sponsorship (erkend referent) and the highly skilled migrant route, so your first relocations are filed the week your BV exists.
Offers that land.
Comp benchmarks that reflect what Amsterdam trading talent costs this quarter, and offer structuring that uses the 30% ruling properly. Net beats gross.
Housing & landing.
The BSN, address and banking chain, temporary housing, relocation agents. The unglamorous layer that decides whether your hires actually arrive happy.
Decision to desk in three to four months.
When the steps run in parallel instead of in sequence, a first employee is at a desk with a BSN, a bank account and a payslip inside a quarter.
Groundwork, in parallel.
BV incorporation, IND recognized sponsorship application, payroll and banking setup. Weeks, not months, when they run side by side.
The mandate owner.
One senior trader or researcher who owns the strategy locally. Relocated from HQ or hired from the Amsterdam market.
Ops on the ground.
One generalist who handles the KvK, the IND paperwork and the hundred small things. This hire pays for itself in founder-hours.
Scale the desk.
Local traders, quants and engineers from the deepest trading talent pool in Europe. This is where we live.
The short
answers.
2026 government figures; they index annually. For current numbers check the IND and the Belastingdienst, or ask us.
Do we need IND recognized sponsorship to hire non-EU staff in the Netherlands?
Yes, in practice. To employ highly skilled migrants your Dutch entity must be an IND recognized sponsor (erkend referent). In 2026 the application costs €5,080, reduced to €2,539 for companies with fewer than 50 employees, and decisions typically arrive within a few weeks. Apply as soon as your BV exists; it gates every relocation.
What salary must we pay a highly skilled migrant in 2026?
The 2026 gross monthly thresholds are €5,942 for candidates aged 30 or over, €4,357 for under-30s, and €3,122 for recent graduates of Dutch universities, excluding the 8% holiday allowance. Trading compensation clears these comfortably, so for this industry the thresholds are paperwork rather than obstacles.
Is the 30% ruling still available for relocated employees?
Yes. Qualifying relocated employees can receive 30% of their salary tax-free through the end of 2026. From January 2027 the rate becomes 27% for new cases, while employees who started before 2024 keep their original terms. The 2026 minimum qualifying salary is €48,013, or €36,497 for under-30s with a master's degree.
How long does it take to get a working desk in Amsterdam?
Three to four months from board decision to a first employee with a BSN, bank access and a payslip, provided entity setup, recognized sponsorship and hiring run in parallel. Firms that run these steps sequentially take six months or more.
Can we staff the office locally instead of relocating people?
Mostly, yes. Amsterdam has Europe's deepest pool of traders, quantitative researchers and low-latency engineers, built by four decades of firms like Optiver, IMC and Flow Traders. The typical pattern is one senior relocation from HQ to own the mandate, with the rest hired locally.
Does QuantFlow handle entity formation or immigration filings?
No. We are recruiters. Corporate, tax and immigration filings sit with specialist partners we work alongside. We run the people side: first hires, compensation benchmarks, offer structuring under the 30% ruling, and relocation coordination.
